jokes, stupid stuff...

My household is in turmoil, Husband in hospital, kids are gone to Tae Kwon Do Camp, and I'm running my head off. Its not a pretty place. If You are a dear reader, say a whoo hoo to God for me please.

Oh.
and...it's my wedding anniversary.
We've been together 20 years, and married 13 today.
The Elderly Man

An elderly man walks into a confessional. The
following conversation ensues:

Man: ‘I am 92 years old, have a wonderful wife of 70
years, many children, grandchildren, and great
grandchildren. Yesterday, I picked up two college girls,
hitchhiking. We went to a motel, where I had sex with
each of them three times.’

Priest: ‘Are you sorry for your sins?’

Man: ‘What sins?’

Priest: ‘What kind of a Catholic are you?’

Man: ‘I’m Jewish.’

Priest: ‘Why are you telling me all this?’

Man: ‘I’m 92 years old … I’m telling everybody.’

The Irish Catholic

A married Irishman went into the confessional and said to his priest, ‘I almost had an affair with another woman.’

The priest said, ‘What do you mean, almost?’

The Irishman said, ‘Well, we got undressed and rubbed together, but then I stopped.’

The priest said, ‘Rubbing together is the same as putting it in. You’re not to see that woman again.
For your penance, say five Hail Mary’s and put $50 in the poor box.’

The Irishman left the confessional, said his prayers, and then walked over to the poor box. He
paused for a moment and then started to leave.

The priest, who was watching, quickly ran over to him saying, ‘I saw that. You didn’t put any money in
the poor box!’

The Irishman replied, ‘Yeah, but I rubbed the $50 on the box, and according to you, that’s the same as
putting it in!’

zombies, boobs and other summer thoughts

So..its now summer...and I am in classes 2 full days a week...when I say full...I mean...over 2 hours in the car, classes from 3-10, and hours before meeting for "study" groups. I must be up front...I know I know...I generally have such an ability to BEAT AROUND THE BUSH....NOOOT!!...but...It REALLY sucks.
What also sucks:...thinking I was going to have one more FULL paycheck...and NOOOTTT!!!
For a Funeral dinner today I made two salads. One was piled high with goodies...spring lettuce, dried cranberries, green onions, radishes, avocados, nuts, dried bananas, raspberry dressing, carrots slivers, almonds, mandarin oranges and sauteed garlic.
So now I'm on the job hunt...but first..trying to gut out my house.
A very good creative moral stalwart friend Sra came over today and began to help me with the process of gutting out my house. This has been a long term process. She may have a buyer for my 1904 upright grand piano....I don't really want to SELL it, but I DO need the money, and the space it takes up. I have to LET THINGS GO. She is like my friend Robyn..who can just JUMP in and do things. I was embarrassed to ask for help. My house...is a wreck. It has too much clutter, too much stuff, and each room has too many purposes. She came in...and just started. Why is it SOO much easier to work and do stuff when a friend is helping you? I got the dryer top cleared off ( It had 2 shrurkened Wool sweaters, a computer monitor, several outfits..socks, junk on it), SRA got the computer area cleaned off...Don's desk area straighten, we were able to take down the cardboard table that was up and piled with stuff from work, Got 2 shelves dedicated to my work/school stuff, girls room --they continued to work on that, Son got his bedroom almost done....8 bags of trash, 4 bags of clothes GONE.
I should post this on flylady.net for stuff thrown out.
I made a decision. I had this weird SKULL ashtray some renter had left, and I thought I had to keep it. It's bugged me ever since. OUT IT WENT. Gone. Unless I go out and dig through all the bags...STOP THINKING ABOUT IT!! awwckk.
Then..tonight Shelly came over and we sorted thorough about 12 totes full of clothes etc...that her dying friend (she has terminal cancer) gave her. I got 2 bags of clothes for my friend Robyn when she comes, girls each got some clothes, son got 2 pair of jeans, and everybody got jammies. ALSO..were Boob holders...LOTS of Victoria secret bras...almost new. However NOT MY SIZE...I may hav to try and get 'extenders' for the straps and wear them anyway!
Its summer so BEWARE of Zombies...some have been spotted near my home!

What kind of Dog are you...QUIZ

Jack Russell Terrier
Jack Russell Terrier This pint-sized explorer is the Magellan of the canine world. Always ready for adventure, the Jack Russell Terrier is known to wander off at a moment's notice. Her life is never dull, and entertainment is key. Accepting in nature, she makes friends easily and is usually the center of attention wherever she goes. Her high energy and upbeat personality make the Jack Russell Terrier a fun-loving part of any family.
This is a Picture from Pioneer Woman and HER smiling Jack Russell:

Character: The Jack Russell Terrier is sturdy, hardy, and robust in appearance. They are outgoing with a keen expression. They have an inquisitive nature. This compact breed is very vocal but is never "yappy". They are fearless and are completely unaware of their small stature.
Temperament: The Jack Russell Terrier is a loving and devoted breed. They are spirited, lively, amusing, and energetic. They get along with older, well-behaved, considerate children. They are not recommended for children under eight years of age. They do not get along with other pets. Their natural hunting instinct brings out their aggressive nature. They are highly intelligent and bold. Their courage often leads them into dangerous situations that may lead to fatal results. The Jack Russell Terrier requires an extraordinary amount of human attention. They are not well suited for a two career family.

In the news..Crock ...of eggs

Here's a news story in which I insert myself as tho I really were involved:
Again, like the research recently of COFFEE SMELLS...pretty much stupid money...
Do we REALLY need research to tell us what a CROCK eggs does? Ok..Maybe its NOT all a crock...of you know what...anyway...read on dear one reader:

have known that shortly before hatching, crocodiles make noises within their eggs. A new study

Biologist noted BEFORE KRisscop gaining exposure through Krisscop's House blog, which involved playbacks of the pre-hatching calls, reveals these calls from the egg tell siblings it's time to hatch and tell moms it's time to uncover the nest. As a mother of three hatched urchin herself, Krisscop can attest to the fact that young ones FREQUENTLY make noise, and tell siblings where to go.

Researchers Vergne and Mathevon , with little or no input from Krisscop of the Jean Monnet University in France monitored Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) eggs that were due to hatch within 10 days. The eggs were placed into one of three groups, for which the researchers either played recordings of pre-hatching calls, recordings of noise (other than the calls), or no sound.

The group of eggs that got a dose of real croc calls responded and moved, as the about finger-sized babies jostled about, more often than the "noise" eggs. The eggs incubated in silence showed no movement. Krisscop wonders if this noise made them mad because their nap was going to be interrupted...

All four of the individuals that successfully hatched in the croc-call group did so during or within 10 minutes of the playbacks.

After the eggs hatched, the moms-to-be stuck around to continue their nest guarding.
Krisscop later noted that "moms" pretty much are ALWAYS the one that continue to stick around.
The researchers found the female crocodiles responded to pre-hatching playbacks coming from loudspeakers hidden underground near the now-empty nests.

The female adults more often turned their heads or moved after egg sounds than after noise.

ANOTHER one!!!

Everybody's home

What a nice thing that is!! I was able to take advantage of a free overnight seminar with my 14 year old son that was fully sponsored (read: FREE). It was at the Retreat center where the girls were on the other side of the camp. It was for teens, their parents, youth pastors and other interested adults on "good decision making skills" and also covered "Love Languages", "Purity", and STD's. This was a leadership type seminar for youth.
It was very good. Sponsored by the "YES" (Youth Excited Sound decision making) coalition of Midland County, they got a Grant to cover the cost of lodging, food etc. Their mission is to promote abstinence from risky behavior to youth and facilitate meaningful connections between them and their parents or other supportive adults.
I also took my gf's son up. There was a Youth Group there working clearing brush etc, so the boys (one more from our group) were able to hang out with them until 2 or so in the morning.
I got to be refreshed, get some new ideas, and listen. I need ways to interact with my kid to keep communication open. It was good.

Its SO quiet!

So the two girls are at camp. I can hear myself think. WHAT is that NOISE??? OH its NOTHING!! IT is NOT whining. It is NOT Names being called out loud.

Never did I ever imagine that they would be old enough to attend camp TOGETHER for a full week. The oldest...is LOVING the quiet...not shrieking. It is weird I tell you...weird. Milk lasts a LOT longer, and I can watch ANYTHING I want without hearing Disney Hannah Puketanna in the background.

and on the 7th day, God rested...probably cause he sent his kids to camp...oh wait they did that whole garden thing they had goin on....
The oldest is worried about her new headgear making her look weird.

Coffee...well no Sh*.....

What coffee drinker on earth couldn't have told them this. WHAT I NEED is to get the money that funds research like this.....!!

FRIDAY, June 13 (HealthDay News) -- Just sniffing that first hot cup of coffee in the morning may help ease some stresses you might be feeling, a South Korean trial indicates.

When rats inhaled the aroma of roasted coffee beans, a number of genes were activated, including some that produce proteins with healthful antioxidant activity, the researchers reported.

"The meaning of it is not totally clear yet," said Dr. Peter R. Martin, director of the Institute of Coffee Studies at Vanderbilt University. "What it does show is that coffee smells do change the brain to some degree, and it behooves us to understand why that is happening."

The findings, from a team led by Han-Seok Seo at Seoul National University in South Korea, were expected to be published in the June 25 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.

The experiment was done with laboratory rats, some of whom were stressed by being deprived of sleep. The researchers did detailed genetic studies that showed the activity of 11 genes was increased and the activity of two genes was decreased in the rats that smelled the coffee, compared to those who did not. In effect, the aroma of the coffee beans helped ease the stress of the sleep-deprived rodents.

The experiment provides "for the first time, clues to the potential antioxidant or stress-relaxation activities of the coffee bean aroma," the researchers wrote.

My Friend Shelly

I rarely post photos of me, mostly because I'm the one taking the pictures. This one, I lifted from my friends blog.
She just got a new job she starts tomorrow, a GREAT job. I'm So happy for her...its been 2 years of trying to keep it together.

CAMP time

SO two of my urchins leave for camp tomorrow....the youngest one will be gone for a week -- the longest I will have not seen her. I would NOT do this if her sister were not going to the same camp at the same time.
When My kids were babies, I used to pack the diaper bag this way...so I thought I would do it to help her stay organized: into each large gallon ziplock bag, I put an entire outfit--Socks, undies, shirt and shorts/pants. That way...she grabs ONE bag...can lug it to the shower/bath room and it has everything in it. If she wears flip flops..fine..no socks used out of that bag and she has an extra pair.
It is AMAZING how much digging and stuff this saves. When I did it for them as babies, I'd put a diaper, little socks, onsie, and outfit in it.
Happy Father's Day out there to all moms who are their kids dad, to all dads...and those who don't know who their dad is.

Adoption/ Foster Care

So within the last 3 days I have once again been put in the Foster Care/Adopt field. I am professionally out of that now, but my desire in that area I think is God given.

Fostering to adopt is wonderful. A family gets to have the child in their home at first, with no promise the child will be staying. (usually nobody knows at this point). THEN....the child stays for weeks/months...each "trying on" the other. Parents are exasperated, Children are adaptable--missing their parents, yet relieved they are being taken care of.
Then comes the day....the parents parental rights have been terminated, and the decision on where the child is to be placed comes up. In only ONE case, in my years of working with Foster Families did the Foster family NOT be able to adopt the child that became theirs in their hearts. Each foster family would reply with "You are NOT taking MY CHILD to anyone else.". The one family that DID let someone else "take" their foster child worked diligently with the new parents for a smooth transition, and they felt THEIR calling was to get the screwed up kids, and help straighten them out, so the adoptive parents would have an easier time with it. They were amazing.

More on this later...I'm done for the day...wish I had something to snack on and drink but this old mother Hubbard's cupboards are BARE.
FAITH= Family's
Are
Important
To
Him. Families are important to God...Create your own! ADOPT!

Thursday, LAST day, new beginnings

WOW! I was first to comment on Pioneer Woman's Black Heels to Tractor Wheels story.

http://thepioneerwoman.com/2008/06/black_heels_to_tractor_wheels_a_love_story_part_xxxv.

So today is the last day for me to have class with One double section of students. I'll have them 4 hours today. It was SUPPOSED to be tomorrow..SO, I can't pick my kids up from the last day of their school, and that really bums me out.

I started Courses again at the University...actually a community college for a certificate program. I already have a 4 year degree, but this I think is better than a Master's and marketable. One "know it all" student assumed I was "just a student" (I've taught the course I'm taking), and I shut him down quite profoundly. He was amused at my notetaking. I always note others names/and what they share about themselves. I told him..HEY I'm a Consultant...That's how I make my money is by KNOWING people..>I can't just shut it off, and then AFTER class, proceeded to introduce HIM to about 5 students whose names I got from my notes. HA. Take that.

More tomorrow..>I'm whippppped

Red Wine Compound Helps Heart, May Slow Aging

Thursday, June 5, 2008; 12:00 AM

THURSDAY, June 5 (HealthDay News) -- Resveratrol, a compound found in grapes, red wine, pomegranates and certain other foods, may protect the heart and slow the effects of aging, a new study suggests.

Tests in mice revealed that low doses of resveratrol mimic the effects of caloric restriction, diets with 20 percent to 30 percent fewer calories than a typical diet that have been shown to extend life span.

Previous research has shown that high doses of resveratrol prevent early death in mice fed a high-fat diet. This new study adds to those findings, showing that receiving low doses of resveratrol in middle age offers many of the benefits as a calorie-reduced diet.

"This brings down the dose of resveratrol toward the consumption reality mode. At the same time, it plugs into the biology of caloric restriction," co-senior author Richard Weindruch, a professor of medicine at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said in a prepared statement.
ad_icon

"Resveratrol is active in much lower doses than previously thought and mimics a significant fraction of the profile of caloric restriction at the gene expression levels," co-senior author Tomas Prolla, a professor of genetics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said in a prepared statement.

The researchers found that resveratrol affected age-related gene expression changes in the heart tissue of mice. The study was published online this week in thePublic Library of Science One.

"There must be a few master biochemical pathways activated in response to caloric restriction, which in turn activate many other pathways. And resveratrol seems to activate some of these master pathways as well," Prolla said.

DSM Nutritional Products of Switzerland and the U.S. National Institutes of Health funded the study.

High School Dropouts Die Younger..article

A new study shows that Americans, especially women, without high school diplomas have a higher — and increasing — risk of premature death. This study is consistent with the findings of When Girls Don’t Graduate, We All Fail: A Call to Improve High School Graduation Rates for Girls. This report, released by the National Women's Law Center, found that high school dropouts encounter higher health risks and have less access to health coverage.

High School Dropouts More Likely to Die Early
by Taryn Wilgus Null, MARGARET Fund Fellow
National Women’s Law Center
A new study found that for Americans without high school diplomas, the risk of premature death is increasing even though the risk of premature death among college graduates is decreasing. The risk of premature death has increased most for white female high school dropouts, whose mortality rate for ages 25 to 64 has risen more than 3 percent from 1993 to 2001. In this age range, white female high school dropouts have a mortality rate 3.8 times higher than that of white women who graduated from college.
This study is consistent with the findings of When Girls Don’t Graduate, We All Fail: A Call to Improve High School Graduation Rates for Girls, a report released by the National Women’s Law Center, which found that high school dropouts encounter higher health risks and have less access to health coverage. These health concerns for high school dropouts are one more reason that it’s vital to ensure that every student is able to graduate from high school.
The Less the Education, the Higher the Risk of Dying Early

By David Brown
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, May 14, 2008; Page A02
The difference in death rates between highly educated and poorly educated people in the United States is very wide and growing wider, according to new research.
For Americans with less than a high school education, the risk of dying prematurely is on the increase -- rising most quickly for white women in that category. In contrast, the risk of premature death among college graduates is falling -- fastest of all for black men.
White high school dropouts are four times as likely to die young as white college graduates, up from a threefold difference in the early 1990s. Among blacks, the trend is similar but less dramatic.
The study, published online yesterday, is the second this spring to reveal an ominous trend toward worsening health and earlier death in disadvantaged segments of the population, especially in certain groups of women.
"Socioeconomic disparity in mortality is pervasive, and it continues to increase," said Ahmedin Jemal, an epidemiologist at the American Cancer Society who lead the study.
A co-author, Robert N. Anderson of the National Center for Health Statistics, said the growing gap "says something about the overall health of our population." He added: "The haves seem to be doing quite well, and their mortality is going down. But those who don't have their resources are not doing so well."
The researchers compared mortality rates from 1993 to 2001. For technical reasons, researchers examined deaths of people age 25 to 64. All were premature deaths in the sense that they occurred at a lower age than the life expectancies of the groups studied.
Whether education levels also predict health and mortality in people 65 and older is unknown. Medicare, the federal health insurance program for seniors, may blunt the effects to some extent. Nevertheless, the new study does provide a window on what is happening at the ages when most people are working and raising families, and what it reveals is both discouraging and encouraging.
While there is growing hazard for poorly educated and presumably lower-income Americans, race in itself does not strongly predict health outcomes. The group with the steepest decline in premature deaths was college-educated African Americans.
White female high school dropouts had the greatest erosion in their health, with their mortality rate rising by a little more than 3 percent a year over the nine-year period. A greater number of accidents, heart attacks, and cases of emphysema and cancer were responsible for about half this increase.
White male high school dropouts also had an increase in their risk of dying prematurely rise, by about 1 percent a year. Increasing numbers of accidents, suicides and cancers were largely responsible.
White male high school dropouts were 4.4 times as likely to die prematurely as white male college graduates. For white women, mortality in dropouts was 3.8 times that of college graduates.
For African American males with college degrees, death rates fell dramatically -- an average of 6 percent a year over the nine-year period. Fewer deaths from heart disease, cancer and, especially, AIDS were the main reasons. For black women who had finished college, mortality fell about 3 percent a year, driven mostly by fewer strokes, heart attacks and cases of cancer.
In general, education had a stronger influence on mortality in men than in women. This was true for both blacks and whites.
The study did not explore the reasons for the disparities, but the researchers were willing to speculate. "The trend is best explained by tobacco, obesity and high blood pressure," Jemal said.
The prevalence of high blood pressure in men and women who did not finish high school rose in the 1990s, putting them at higher risk of strokes, heart attacks and kidney failure. Obesity rose markedly for both sexes, as well.
At the same time, better-educated and wealthier groups have been more likely to adopt more healthful behaviors. For example, the fraction of U.S. women without high school degrees who smoked fell from 37 percent to 25 percent from 1974 to 2004. For college graduates, it fell from 26 percent to 9 percent, a much steeper decline.
A study published in April found that in about 1,000 U.S. counties, the life expectancy of women fell between 1983 and 1999. The counties tended to be rural, with many in Appalachia, the South and the Mississippi River Valley. Increases in cancer, Type 2 diabetes and emphysema were largely responsible.
One of the authors of the new study said he thinks that one factor contributing to the drop in life expectancy in those places is a "selective loss" of young people with college educations.
"What is left is a concentration of people in the lower socioeconomic strata," said Anderson, who is chief of the mortality statistics branch at the National Center for Health Statistics. "There is no way to prove that is happening, but it wouldn't surprise me if that is what is happening."
The new study is published in PLoS One, a journal published by the Public Library of Science. It was based on vital statistics from 43 states and the District; seven states had incomplete education information and were excluded. The analysis was confined to non-Hispanic whites and blacks "because of problems with reporting other racial and ethnic subgroups," the researchers noted.

Dance Recital week

Nobody can understand if they don't have a child in Dance. Monday night= Rehersal (for TWO kids), get home late, spend money eating bad food out, little sleep.
Tuesday= Dance rehearsal, other child, go out to eat with Grandma who is getting more and more...well Alzheimer-ish, Get bad food, get home late...get NO sleep because I think its coming close to "that" time-and for some reason I'm insomniac...
Weds= go to co workers, with her LESS than WEEK OLD BABY, hold baby (4# ?ounces), get stuff graded, and sent in....
Tomorrow...
Dance recital..AFTER, oldest son's 8th grade graduation. My one person that still reads this may know..I was out of work a LONG time. I debated about giving up the $$ for teaching tomorrow afternoon (3 classes at one time thanks to Interactive Television Courses)...but ....and My 8th grade son said he didn't care.........but...I figured out in time that I cared. ....so...I'm only teaching classes tomorrow morning (4 classes) so I can attend his graduation. (I'm also on the School Board of that school and I think it is important Board members actually show their face at events).
THEN>.....Rush to RECITAL night one. Friday....work all day RECITAL NIGHT TWO....
SAT: THREE SHOWS, plus cater luncheon for about 30. .....
Yah
So..If a person doesn't have any kids in dance...they can't even begin to imagine my week.
